Menokin, the plantation home of Francis Lightfoot Lee near Warsaw, Virginia, stands on a site long associated with the Rappahannock people, whose name it preserves. Begun around 1769 after Lee’s marriage to Rebecca Tayloe, the stone house was occupied by 1771 on a 1,000-acre property given by her father, John Tayloe II. Lee later served in the Continental Congress and signed the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation. Though now a ruin, Menokin remains significant for the survival of much of its original fabric and for preservation efforts that stabilize the structure, use glass to reveal lost sections, and honor the enslaved people connected to the plantation.
