The Kampong in Coconut Grove, Miami, is a 9-acre tropical garden that began as the winter home of horticulturalist David Fairchild and his wife Marian after they bought the property in 1916. Fairchild filled the estate with tropical plants gathered through his far-reaching plant introduction work, making it a living record of his career. The couple lived there permanently from 1928 until their deaths, and botanist Catherine Hauberg Sweeney later preserved the plantings, secured historic recognition, and donated the property in 1984 to the National Tropical Botanical Garden’s predecessor. Today it remains both a historic estate and an active center for research, education, and public access.
