The Barnacle Historic State Park in Coconut Grove preserves the former bayfront home of Ralph Middleton Munroe, built in 1891 and recognized as the oldest house in its original location in Miami-Dade County. Once part of Munroe’s 40-acre property on Biscayne Bay, the site reflects both his life and the growth of early Coconut Grove. Munroe, a founder of the community and a leading figure in Biscayne Bay yachting, designed dozens of boats, helped establish the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club, and organized an early regatta in 1887. The park also protects a rare remnant of the original Miami Hammock landscape.
