Koi, or specifically Nishikigoi in Japanese, are ornamental descendants of the common carp. Long ago, Asian farmers preferred to breed the carp with the most unique colors for viewing purposes. This selective breeding resulted in the vibrant variations of Koi seen today in water gardens throughout the world.
