Near this stone rest the remains of 889 Union soldiers, gathered from the battlefields of Mechanicsville, Savage-Station, Gaines-Mills, and the vicinity of Cold-Harbor. Congress erected it in 1877, in the 101st year of the independence of the United States of America.
