A life-size fiberglass model represents a Chance-Vought F4U Corsair fighter marked as flown in 1949 by Commander Alberto H. Santa Maria, a U.S. Navy officer born in 1924 who died in 2010, a Kent County, Maryland, resident, a member of the Massey Air Museum, a naval aviator who flew the F6F Hellcat, the F4U-5 Corsair, and helicopters, a senior test pilot for Boeing-Vertol and the first to fly 1000 experimental hours in the CH-47 Chinook, an engineering test pilot for All American Engineering, and a member of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots. In 1949, during a cruise off Newfoundland with Flight Test Sqdn. VX-3 out of Atlantic City, New Jersey, then Lt. Santa Maria was involved in a deck strike accident aboard the USS Palau (CVE-122) after receiving an early cut command from the Landing Signal Officer; the officer, not Santa Maria, was held responsible, and the accident, though dramatic and potentially fatal, was not attributed to poor airmanship. After 11 years on active duty in the Navy, he went on to a distinguished career as a helicopter test pilot.
