Joseph Holt, born in 1807 and buried six miles north, served as commissioner of patents, postmaster general, and secretary of war in President Buchanan's administration from 1857 to 1861. In 1862, Lincoln named him judge advocate general of the Union army. Holt prosecuted conspirators in the assassination of Lincoln in 1865, and he retired as judge advocate in 1875.
