Born in Rich Square, General Walter E. Boomer served as Commanding General of Marine Central Command and the First Marine Expeditionary Force during the Persian Gulf War of 1990-91. He defended Saudi Arabia, then led 90,000 Marines in battle to liberate Kuwait and defeat the invasion force from Iraq. In 1992, he became Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps.
