Barnegat Lighthouse State Park stands at the northern tip of Long Beach Island in New Jersey, where the Barnegat Lighthouse marks a crucial navigational point for ships traveling to and from New York Harbor. Fast currents, shifting sandbars, and offshore shoals made these waters dangerous, and the light helped vessels avoid hazards extending from the shoreline. That maritime setting still defines the park, which is recognized on the New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail. Along with the lighthouse and its broad views, the park includes an interpretive center and the Maritime Forest Trail, preserving both a scenic coastal landscape and a place closely tied to New Jersey’s seafaring past.
