During World War II, the U.S. Merchant Marine and Navy Armed Guard served together aboard cargo ships, troop transports, and oil tankers that delivered war material to troops overseas. Eight hundred twenty of these vessels were lost and became steel coffins, most sunk by enemy submarines that sent their crews to watery graves, some within sight of this great lighthouse, making the deep their cemetery.
