Wisconsin Point is a three-mile peninsula on Lake Superior off Superior, Wisconsin, valued for its long beaches, lagoon and forest habitats, bird migration stopovers, and views toward Duluth. The point also holds deep Indigenous significance: the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa settled here in the early 1600s, and it became a sacred Ojibwe burial ground. After forced-removal pressures in 1852, Ojibwe leaders helped secure the 1854 Treaty of La Pointe. In 1918, nearly 200 graves were exhumed for a U.S. Steel ore dock that was never built, causing lasting trauma. In 2022, part of the site, including burial grounds, was returned to the Fond du Lac Band.
