Snyder County was formed on March 2, 1855, out of Union County. It was named for Simon Snyder, governor from 1808 to 1817, who made his home in Selinsgrove. Middleburg, the county seat, was laid out in 1800 and incorporated in 1864. The county was also the scene of the Penns Creek Massacre of 1755.
