Cadillac Mountain, on Mount Desert Island in Acadia National Park on Maine’s coast, rises nearly 1,530 feet and is the highest point in Hancock County. Long before it was called Green Mountain and then Cadillac Mountain, the island and peak were part of the Wabanaki homeland, where Maliseet, Mi'kmaq, Passamaquoddy, and Penobscot people met, traded, fished, and hunted; the island was identified as Pesamkuk and the mountain as Wapuwoc, or “white mountain of the first light.” Named in 1918 for Antoine de La Mothe Cadillac, it later drew tourists by cog railway and hotel, served as a World War II radar site, and remains associated with sunrise and modern communications.
