Filoli is an early 20th-century country house and garden estate in Woodside, south of San Francisco, built from 1915 to 1917 for William Bowers Bourn II and Agnes Moody Bourn. Designed by Willis Polk, its large Georgian-influenced mansion stands within extensive grounds whose formal gardens, developed from 1917 to 1922 with Bruce Porter and horticulturist Isabella Worn, became the estate’s defining feature. After the Bourns’ deaths, the Roth family enriched the plantings and added new amenities before Lurline Roth donated the estate to the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1975. Today Filoli is a public historic site celebrated for its architecture, gardens, orchards, and layered landscape history.
