Zion Baptist Church's congregation was organized by 18 Blacks in Aug., 1878. Its first church on Center St. was established in 1882, and the present church was bought in 1927. Notable pastors included W. H. Craighead, D.E. King, A.D. Wms. King, brother of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and H.D. Cockerham. Zion served as a base for local and state civil rights activities, and the Ky. Christian Leadership Conference office was in an adjoining building.
