Woodlawn Preserve protects a remnant of the Albany Pine Bush in Schenectady’s Woodlawn neighborhood and is the only surviving example of that rare ecosystem in this part of the city. Created by the city in 1969 as 135 acres of forever wild land, it is Schenectady’s largest passive park and includes the headwaters of the Lisha Kill, rare plants, wetlands, open water, dune vegetation, and pitch pine-scrub oak barrens. Once home to the Karner Blue butterfly, it is part of a larger pine barrens-wetlands complex recognized for conservation. Development proposals in 1993 and 2003 challenged its protection, but later preservation efforts strengthened its future.
