Estes Kefauver was born and buried on this land near Madisonville. A graduate of the University of Tennessee and Yale Law School, he served as an attorney, State Commissioner of Finance and Taxation from January to May 1939, U.S. Representative from the Third Congressional District from 1939 to 1948, and U.S. Senator from 1948 to 1963. He was a candidate for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination in 1952 and its vice-presidential nominee in 1956. As a statesman, his interests included congressional procedural reform, Atlantic Union, crime prevention, and anti-monopoly legislation.
