Morro Strand State Beach is a protected California state park beach on the north side of Morro Bay along State Route 1, set on Estero Bay. Formerly called Atascadero State Beach, it centers on a three-mile shoreline connected by the Morro Strand Trail and is known for its open beachfront rather than dense development. Fishing, surfing, walking, and jogging are common uses. Dog restrictions on part of the beach are tied in part to protection of the Western Snowy Plover. Nearby protected waters in Morro Bay help conserve marine wildlife and ecosystems. In 2008, the beach was among 48 state parks proposed for closure during a state deficit reduction effort, but it remains in the park system.
