Fort Braden began in 1839 as a military outpost during the Second Seminole War, and although the fort was abandoned at the war’s end, the nearby farming community remained. A school in the Fort Braden area was first mentioned in 1847, when the Tallahassee Floridian reported tax collections at the Fort Braden schoolhouse. In rural Leon County, early education was provided in small one-room schools whose offerings were inferior to those in urban areas, yet many such schools were built in Fort Braden and across the county over the next 80 years. School consolidation was proposed around the turn of the 20th century but did not begin until the 1920s, when motorized school buses and improved roads made centralized schooling possible. In 1926, the four-classroom Fort Braden School was built with an inset entrance and double doors with molded accents. For the next 66 years, it served both as a school and as a community center, until a new Fort Braden School replaced it in 1993. Today, the Old Fort Braden School continues to serve Fort Braden’s citizens as a community center.
