In September 1862, during the second year of the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert E. Lee launched his army into Maryland and made Harpers Ferry his first target, ordering "Stonewall" Jackson to attack. Jackson overcame great obstacles, defeated Union forces in a three-day battle, and forced the largest surrender of U.S. troops during the Civil War. His victory at Harpers Ferry enabled Lee to make his stand at nearby Antietam. Lieutenant James H. Clark of the 115th New York Infantry recalled that at first the incoming shells fell short of camp, but each one landed nearer until the earth was plowed up at their feet and their tents were torn to tatters.
