During the second evening of the battle, "Stonewall" Jackson used military deception to draw Union attention away from the south end of Bolivar Heights. Under cover of darkness, the Stonewall Division marched forward from near this location in a feigned attack against the north end of the heights, creating a commotion that distracted Federal forces from Jackson's real advance one mile to the south. This maneuver helped Jackson position Confederates behind the main enemy line.
