Rising Wolf Mountain, a 9,513-foot peak in Glacier National Park’s Lewis Range, towers above the sacred Two Medicine area and rises sharply over Two Medicine Lake, making it one of the region’s defining landmarks. Its name reflects both Blackfeet and frontier history: the Blackfeet called it Mah-kwi-i-po-ats-sin, “The way the wolf gets up,” and the English name also recalls Hugh Monroe, a fur trader known as Rising Wolf, whose friend James Willard Schultz later applied the name to the mountain. Formed from ancient sedimentary rock and shaped by the Lewis Overthrust, it stands in a harsh alpine subarctic climate.
