Sinopah Mountain is an 8,276-foot peak in the Lewis Range of Glacier National Park, rising just west of Two Medicine Lake and helping define the area’s skyline. Its name comes from Blackfeet history: Sinopah, meaning “kit fox,” was the Indian wife of Hugh Monroe, or Rising Wolf, and daughter of the influential Blackfeet chief Lone Walker. The mountain also reflects the region’s deep geologic past, being formed from sedimentary rock deposited between the Precambrian and Jurassic and shaped by the Lewis Overthrust, which began about 170 million years ago. It remains notable for both its dramatic setting and its tie to Blackfeet heritage.
