Farpoint Observatory in Kansas, on the grounds of Mission Valley High School near Auburn and southwest of Topeka, is owned and operated by the Northeast Kansas Amateur Astronomers' League and recognized by the International Astronomical Union as observatory code 734. It became especially known as the home of the Farpoint Asteroid Search Team, which gained an international reputation for discovering more than 330 non-near-Earth asteroids and many near-Earth objects, while also contributing extensive minor-planet observations. A NASA grant helped Farpoint acquire and refurbish the Pitt telescope, underscoring its role as a serious working observatory. In 1999, asteroid 23989 Farpoint was discovered there and named for the observatory.
