Kansas’s state historical museum in Topeka presents the story of the state from prehistoric times to the present through major events and everyday life. Part of the Kansas Historical Society, founded in 1875, it opened in its current building in 1984 on an 80-acre site in west Topeka. Its galleries and collections include large immersive displays, notable artifacts tied to figures such as John Brown, Carrie A. Nation, and Dwight D. Eisenhower, and an especially important group of Civil War flags from African American regiments. After closing in 2022 for a major renovation, it reopened in 2025 with thematic galleries and broader attention to minority and tribal histories.
