Cane Hill Cemetery in Canehill, Arkansas, preserves the early history of the community as well as its Civil War associations. Established in an area settled in the late 1820s, it contains the graves of two first settlers, Thomas Garvin, who died in 1834, and Thomas Buchanan, who died in 1836. The ground was also the site of the community’s first church and schoolhouse, tying it to Cane Hill’s religious, educational, and civic beginnings. It later became linked to the Battle of Cane Hill in November 1862 and holds many Civil War-era burials. Its importance from settlement through wartime memory led to its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
