Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park
Military
Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park preserves the site of the December 7, 1862, Battle of Prairie Grove, where a Union victory secured U.S. Army control of northwestern Arkansas. Efforts to preserve and memorialize the battlefield began in 1908, expanded with improvements in the 1920s, and revived after 1953 through community fundraising and the relocation of historic structures, including a stone chimney, log home, and blacksmith's shop. Hindman Hall, dedicated in 1964, became a central museum feature. The battlefield entered the Arkansas state park system in 1971 and has since grown to 707.8 acres while remaining an active place of remembrance and Civil War reenactment.
