Mount Ascutney State Park near Windsor, Vermont, centers on Mount Ascutney and preserves an important historic landscape shaped during the Depression era. Vermont created the park in 1933 after acquiring more than 1,000 acres with New Deal support, and a Civilian Conservation Corps camp developed the summit parkway, campground, and picnic facilities before leaving in 1938. In 2002, 1,500 acres were placed on the National Register of Historic Places for that CCC legacy. The park also serves as a major recreation area, with more than 12 miles of hiking trails, a steep paved parkway rising toward the summit, and the Cascade Falls Natural Area in its southwest corner.
