Desert View Watchtower is a seventy-foot stone observation tower on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, completed in 1932 at Desert View near the park’s east entrance. Designed by architect Mary Colter for the Fred Harvey Company, it was conceived to resemble an Ancestral Puebloan watchtower while remaining a carefully composed modern structure rather than a literal reconstruction. Its Kiva Room, circular balconies, irregular windows, reflectoscopes, and enclosed observation level were all designed to shape visitors’ experience of the canyon. Interior murals by Hopi artist Fred Kabotie and painted imagery by Fred Geary further distinguish it as one of the Grand Canyon’s best-known works of park architecture.
