Big Sioux Recreation Area
Nature
Big Sioux Recreation Area, about 4 miles east of Sioux Falls along the Big Sioux River, is a major outdoor destination in southeastern South Dakota. Set in the southern Coteau des Prairies, it combines rolling hills, broad views, wooded river corridor habitat, and a network of walking, biking, horseback, mountain biking, and paddling trails. The park supports diverse wildlife, including many migrating bird species and winter bald eagles. A historic log cabin built in 1869 by Norwegian immigrants preserves an early chapter of settlement along the river. Even after severe flooding in March and September 2019, the area remained an important recreation site near Sioux Falls.
