On October 3, 1899, William L. Eagleton, Grand Master of Masons for Oklahoma Territory, laid the cornerstone for the first Scottish Rite Masonic Temple in Oklahoma at this site. The temple occupied the south half of the block and had a larger auditorium, stage, and proscenium than the Brooks Opera House in downtown Guthrie, with modern improvements including electric lights. D.W.F. Turbyfill of Oklahoma City designed the building. The Dedication Reunion of the Guthrie Scottish Rite Bodies was held there on May 29-31, 1900, and a class of 47 candidates became 32° Masons, launching what became one of the largest Scottish Rite Masonic organizations in the United States. In 1920, the Scottish Rite constructed a new edifice at 900 East Oklahoma Avenue, and the first temple was finally razed in 1956.
