Dr. C.A. Collins came to Monterey in 1946 from Wilder, Tennessee, where he had worked as a camp physician at the Wilder coal mines for almost a score of years. After arriving in Monterey, he formed a partnership with local physician T.M. Crain, and the two men constructed a two-story hospital building on Commercial Avenue. Monterey Hospital opened in October 1948, and Dr. Collins and Crain practiced medicine there until December 1972, when it closed.
