People who lived in what is now Shenandoah National Park raised apples as a cash crop, including the Milam apple, which was probably developed in an orchard very near Milam Gap and gave the gap its name. The park's clear mountain streams support fish species including native eastern brook trout. U.S. President Herbert Hoover, an avid fly-fisherman, chose a site two miles east at the headwaters of the Rapidan River for his weekend retreat because of its closeness to these trout streams. Rapidan Camp was built in 1929 and gave the 31st president a place to enjoy his favorite pastime.
