Hickory Museum of Art
Arts & Culture
Founded in 1944 after a local campaign led by Paul Whitener and supported by A. Alex Shuford Jr., Hickory Museum of Art grew from a small civic effort into North Carolina’s second-oldest museum. It expanded through several homes as its collection and programs developed, eventually becoming part of Hickory’s SALT Block cultural campus. The museum is known for a permanent collection of 19th- to 21st-century American art and for its strong commitment to Southern contemporary folk art and regional traditions. National accreditation has recognized its distinctive role in connecting American art, local identity, and public cultural life in western North Carolina.
