Buck Mountain, also called Bucks Mountain, stands in eastern Pennsylvania across Columbia and Luzerne counties and reaches 1,942 feet, making it the fourth-highest mountain in Columbia County. Its geology is part of the anthracite region, with red shale, conglomerate, and anthracite underlying a landscape shaped by historic coal mining. Mining there was associated over time with the Buck Mountain Coal Company, Coxe Brothers & Co., and the Lehigh Valley Coal Company, with coal shipped by rail through Gowen and Hazleton. The mountain also included a Reading Railroad tunnel, likely took its name in 1869 or 1870 from Albert Ansbach, and has more recently been considered for wind energy development.
