World War II began on December 7, 1941, and ended with Nazi Germany's surrender on May 7, 1945, and Japan's surrender on August 14, 1945. It is dedicated to the 16,353,700 American men and women who served in the name of world freedom, including 292,131 killed in action, 670,846 wounded in action, and 8744 missing in action.
