Taos Pueblo veterans are honored by name, including those identified as Bataan Death March veterans, and the history of Taos Pueblo also includes the Revolt of 1847, when Taos Pueblo Indians rose against the occupation of the United States military. United States troops destroyed the original San Geronimo Mission, where they believed Pueblo members had taken refuge, and the destroyed mission site is now used as a cemetery. The Taos Pueblo people were never conquered and have maintained their culture and tradition.
