Birth of the Park Idea
Richfield, Ohio · Cuyahoga Valley National Park
Nature
In the years after World War II, suburban growth reached the edge of the Cuyahoga Valley, and by 1960 development threatened the valley's pastoral character. John F. Seiberling emerged as its champion, first opposing individual projects as a citizen concerned with community issues and later as a member of a regional planning commission. Looking for a permanent alternative to piecemeal battles, he began advocating the larger idea of creating a Cuyahoga Valley park to prevent development forever. He believed that people living in an urban environment need open space to maintain their relationship with the earth. Born in 1918, Seiberling grew up on the edge of the valley at Stan Hywet Hall, where automobile trips, family picnics, and visits to picturesque farms deepened his appreciation for the valley. He also drew inspiration from his grandfather, founder of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and a leader in establishing the Akron Metropolitan Park District.
