Appalachian Ski Mountain, between Blowing Rock and Boone in western North Carolina, opened in 1962 as Blowing Rock Ski Lodge and became Appalachian Ski Mountain in 1968. As one of the High Country’s three ski mountains, it holds an early and lasting place in North Carolina’s modern ski industry and in the broader development of Southeastern skiing. Its thirteen trails, night skiing, and complete snowmaking coverage reflect the importance of infrastructure in a region with variable natural snowfall. The resort is also known for terrain parks, broad rental and lodge services, a skating rink, the French Swiss Ski College, and annual winter events.
