Daniel Boone Native Gardens in Boone, North Carolina, was created as both a public botanical garden and a compact study center for the state’s native plants. Begun in 1961 by the Garden Club of North Carolina and opened in 1966, it was designed by landscape architect Doan Ogden to present regional species in a naturalistic setting. Its features include wrought-iron gates donated by Daniel Boone VI, a stone gatehouse, reflection pool, rustic bridge, and the Squire Boone Cabin, built with logs from Jesse Boone’s cabin. The gardens display a wide range of North Carolina trees, shrubs, wildflowers, and mountain habitats, including a bog garden added in 1992.
