Education
The connection between Stanford University and Redwood City reaches back to the university’s opening, when the first students were admitted on October 1, 1891, and the Pioneer Class included at least one student from Redwood City as well as about 25% women. Stanford’s physical presence in Redwood City began in 1905, when the Stanford Boar Club built a boathouse on Redwood Creek. In the early 2000’s, Stanford University and Stanford Healthcare sought additional space, considered several sites, and chose the Mid-Point Technology Park site because of its proximity to the original campus and access to multiple transportation corridors. The new campus allows the university to grow, relocate much of its administrative staff there, reflect Stanford’s spirit and character, and enable the historic campus to focus on academics. Stanford Redwood City opened in 2019, and the nearby Stanford Medicine Outpatient Center opened in 2009.
