Ute Mountain is an isolated 10,093-foot summit in northern New Mexico and the highest point of both the Cerro del Yuta Wilderness and the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument. A free-standing extinct dacite volcanic cone formed in the Pliocene, it rises about 2,500 feet above the surrounding basalt plains, giving it striking prominence in the landscape. Its slopes support pinyon pine, ponderosa pine, aspen, and Douglas fir, and runoff drains toward the Rio Grande along its western base. Also known by the Spanish name Cerro del Yuta, or Mountain of the Ute, it is named for the Ute people and remains a remote landmark managed by the Bureau of Land Management.
