Cerro del Yuta Wilderness is a 13,420-acre protected area in northern New Mexico within the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument, managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. Established in 2019, it is centered on Ute Mountain, the monument’s highest point at 10,093 feet. The wilderness rises around a volcanic cone on the Taos Plateau, and its plant life changes with elevation, from pinyon pine and juniper on lower slopes to ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, and small groves of aspen higher up. It preserves both the mountain and its surrounding high-desert forest.
