Mount Nimham, a 1,273-foot mountain in New York’s Hudson Highlands northwest of Carmel, is named for Chief Daniel Nimham of the Wappinger tribe after correcting a long-standing spelling error. It is especially known for its steel fire lookout tower, built in 1940 by Civilian Conservation Corps Camp P-135 of Peekskill and first staffed in 1941. As aerial fire detection expanded, lookout operations ended after the 1988 season and the tower closed in early 1989. Local volunteers later restored the structure, completing the work in spring 2005. Open to the public, it is listed on the National Historic Lookout Register and still retains its manufacturer’s identification tag.
