Silver Springs State Fish and Wildlife Area in Kendall County is a 1,350-acre Illinois park along the Fox River, named for a natural spring whose shimmering surface inspired its name. Opened in January 1969 as part of an expansion of northern Illinois state parks, it grew from an original 1,250 acres. The area also preserves a much older human story, with evidence of Indigenous occupation reaching back to the end of the last ice age. Shaped by river, spring, lakes, woods, wetlands, and restored prairie, it supports diverse wildlife and native plants while providing year-round opportunities for fishing, hunting, boating, trails, and winter recreation.
