During the last decades of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century, Newport and Oliver Township reached their high mark of industrialization and manufacturing, and in 1895 T.M. Fowler of Morrisville, Pennsylvania, portrayed a prosperous river town still surrounded by rural countryside in a pen and ink drawing.
