Granville Allen was the first Union soldier killed in west Kentucky, dying while skirmishing with a CSA scouting party on the Big Hill on Oct. 29, 1861. He was a member of Company D, 17th Kentucky Infantry, enrolled at Calhoun on Oct. 3, 1861, by Col. John H. McHenry. Union army volunteers south of the Green River risked danger for home and family.
