Lake Pueblo State Park in southern Colorado combines major water infrastructure with one of the region’s leading recreation areas. Centered on Pueblo Reservoir, an impoundment of the Arkansas River behind Pueblo Dam, it was built from 1970 to 1975 as part of the Fryingpan-Arkansas Project to provide supplemental water for agricultural, municipal, and industrial use and to help control flooding on a river with a destructive flood history. Today its thousands of acres and extensive shoreline support boating, fishing, camping, trails, and swimming, while the reservoir also includes hydroelectric generation and surrounding habitat for diverse wildlife, including the rare blackneck garter snake.
