The Narrows in Knox County, Texas, is a narrow east-to-west ridge about four to six miles east of Benjamin that divides two major drainage systems, with runoff flowing north toward the Wichita, Red, and Mississippi rivers and south toward the Brazos and the Gulf of Mexico. Long before white settlement, buffalo, fresh springs, and grass made it an important hunting ground for tribes including the Comanche, Wichita, Kiowa, Apache, Seminole, and Tonkawa, and traces of their camps and battles remain. Later settlers used the same trails, and the surrounding badlands, canyons, and ravines are now used largely for ranching.
