The Methodist Episcopal Church of Mechanicsville, an outgrowth of Wesley Chapel, was built in 1856 and took its name from the community, which was known for the mills and industry that thrived there. In 1882, the first post office was established and the hamlet was renamed Viola. The church was rededicated in 1968 as Viola United Methodist Church.
